Baseball Opens Up Big Ten Play at Michigan

Minnesota will continue its 19-game road trip when it heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. this week to take on the Wolverines in the first weekend of Big Ten play. The Golden Gophers will play Michigan in a single game on Friday, Apr. 2 at 2 p.m., in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 3 at 12 noon and Sunday, Apr. 4 at 12 noon in a single game. Minnesota enters the week with a 10-8 record, while Michigan is 9-9 coming into the weekend series. Last season the two teams had their first two games of the series cancelled by bad weather. Minnesota swept the doubleheader by scores of 9-3 and 8-7 in eight innings. All four games will be webcast on gophersports.com, and Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game will broadcast on KSNB (950 AM).
Minnesota went 3-0 in the Iowa Cubs/Hawkeye Classic to move their mark to 6-4 on the current 10-game road trip. The Golden Gophers still have nine straight road games remaining. Minnesota will open Big Ten play with a four-game series at Michigan on Apr. 2-4. The Golden Gophers will then play a midweek game at Northern Iowa on Apr. 7, before closing the 19-game road trip with four games at Indiana on Apr. 9-11. The 19 straight road games is the most in school history matching the 1966 team that started out the season with a 19-game road swing. Minnesota's most comparable road swing in recent memory was a 17-game road trip in 1990. The Golden Gophers also started out on an 18-game road trip in 1970 and a 17-game road trip in 1954. Minnesota went 11-7-1 during its 19-game road trip in 1966 to start the season. A big part of Minnesota's road trip is the fact that the Metrodome started the process of putting new turf in for the Minnesota Twins' season immediately following the Dairy Queen Classic this past week.
