Baseball Defeats South Dakota State 3-2 in 10 Innings

a Matt Fornasiere delivered a double to right centerfield in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive home the winning run as the Minnesota baseball team (16-12) defeated South Dakota State (7-27) 3-2 in 10 innings on Wednesday, Apr. 14 at Siebert Field. It was the Golden Gophers first game of the year at Siebert Field, where they went 19-4 in the 2003 season.

It was also the fifth extra-inning game Minnesota has played this season. The Golden Gophers are 3-2 in extra-inning games this year.

Minnesota started out the scoring in the top of the first inning with a single run to take a 1-0 lead. Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) led off the game by reaching second on an error by the South Dakota State centerfielder. Steidl moved up to third on a passed ball with one out. After a Fornasiere walk, the Golden Gophers executed a double steal with Fornasiere going to second and Steidl scoring to make it 1- 0.

South Dakota State tied the game in the top of the fourth inning at 1- 1. Tony Lane singled and stole second with one out to set things up for the Jackrabbits. Greg Geary delivered an RBI double to left centerfield to tie the game at 1-1.

The Jackrabbits scored a single run in the top of the eighth to go up 2-1. Lane started things against with a one-out single. Ryan Greene followed with double to left centerfield to give South Dakota State a one-run lead.

Minnesota answered in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 2-2. Jared Sanders (Merrill, Wis.) led off with a double to right centerfield. Andy Hunter moved Sanders to third on deep fly out to centerfield. Tony Leseman (St. Paul, Minn.) followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

The Golden Gophers scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to win the game 3-2. Luke MacLean (Bloomington, Minn.) led off the inning with walk. Fornasiere followed with a double to right centerfield to bring home Fornasiere and give Minnesota the extra-inning victory.

Minnesota had five different pitchers go the mound on the day. Jeff Moen (Glenwood, Minn.) pitched two shutout innings to pick up the win in relief to move to 2-1 on the season. Luke Beresford (Duluth, Minn.) started and pitched two shutout innings only allowing one baserunner on a hit. Cole DeVries (Eden Prairie, Minn.) pitched three and two thirds innings, gave up four hits, one run and struck out two batters. John Gaub (South St. Paul, Minn.) also pitched one and a third perfect innings, while Andy Peters (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) gave up two hits and one run in one inning of work.

Greene took the loss for South Dakota State giving up one run in two thirds innings. Geoff Bray pitched three scoreless innings, giving up only two hits.

Fornasiere, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games, reached base four times and was one-for-two with one RBI and a double. MacLean was also two-for-four with one run, while Leseman finished two-for-three with one RBI.

Minnesota will host its first home Big Ten baseball series against Penn State on Apr. 16-18 at Siebert Field. The Golden Gophers will play the Nittany Lions on Friday, Apr. 16 at 3 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 17 in a doubleheader on 1 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 18 at 12 noon.
