Minnesota finally returned home to the friendly confines of Siebert Field after a 19-game road trip. In the Golden Gophers first game at Siebert Field in the 2004 season, Minnesota defeated South Dakota State 3-2 in 10 innings. The Golden Gophers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but were trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. Minnesota scored a run in the ninth to tie the game, and plated the winning run in the 10th inning. The Golden Gophers resume Big Ten play as they host Penn State in a four-game conference series. Minnesota will play the Nittany Lions Friday, Apr. 16 at 3 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 17 in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 18 at 12 noon. The Golden Gophers come into the weekend with 16-12 overall record and are 5-3 in Big Ten play. All four of the Golden Gophers' games with Penn State will be webcast on gophersports.com. Saturday and Sunday's games against Penn State will be broadcast on KSNB (950 AM) by Tom Witschen.
Minnesota won three of four at Indiana to finish its 19-game road trip with a record of 11-8. As a team the Golden Gophers outscored opponents 6.8 rpg to 5.6 on the road trip. Minnesota batted .308 as a team and had an ERA of 4.52. The Golden Gophers went 3-4 on their California trip, 3-0 in the Iowa Cubs/Hawkeye Tournament, 2-2 at Michigan, lost a midweek game at Northern Iowa and won three of four at Indiana. The 19 straight road games was the most in school history matching the 1966 team that started out the season with a 19-game road swing. Minnesota's most comparable road swing in recent memory was a 17-game road trip in 1990. The Golden Gophers also started out on an 18-game road trip in 1970 and a 17-game road trip in 1954. Minnesota went 11-7-1 during its 19-game road trip in 1966 to start the season. A big part of Minnesota's road trip is the fact that the Metrodome started the process of putting new turf in for the Minnesota Twins' season immediately following the Dairy Queen Classic this past week.
