Senior Piper Marten pitched a three-hit complete game shutout as the Golden Gopher softball team (26-14, 6-3) defeated Purdue (23-18, 0-7), 2-0, at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. With the victory, Marten tied Steph Klaviter's school record of 84 career wins. Minnesota and Purdue will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Noon.
The Golden Gophers got all the scoring they would need in the bottom of the first inning. After Stephanie Sward singled and Tonya Mitchell reached on an error, freshman Megan Higginbotham hit a two-run triple to left center. For Higginbotham, it was her second two-run triple in as many games.
Leading 2-0, Minnesota managed just one more hit against Purdue starter Diana LaRiva. She allowed three hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort of her own.
Marten allowed just three singles on the night and finished with six strikeouts and one walk. Marten improved to 17-7 on the season and has now won 12 of her last 13 starts.
