Minnesota avenged a 3-1 defeat to its alumni last year with a five-goal onslaught this past Saturday. The Golden Gophers outshot their alumni opponents, 24-7, in the contest. Leading the way for the varsity was transfer Regina Moench, a three-time all-conference performer at Creighton University. Moench scored twice and added a pair of assists in the victory. All-Big Ten Freshman Haley Lentsch added a goal and an assist, while Amanda Edwards and Hilary Stowell each contributed a goal. Becky Dellaria and Annie Carr added assists in the win.
"We felt positive about our performance against the alumni," head coach Mikki Denney Wright said. "This team lost 3-1 to the alumni last spring, so it was important for us to come out and send a message about our improvement over the spring. We were excited about our ability to attack as a team, but there are still some obvious areas we need to improve on in our final week of training"
Following the game, a reception was held in the club room at Williams Arena to celebrate 10 years of Golden Gopher soccer at the University of Minnesota. With over 100 people in attendance, the highlight of the event was the retirement of three-time All-American Jennifer McElmury's jersey. She is the first player in the history of the program to receive the honor.
"It was fantastic to have so many of our alumni back for our 10 year celebration," Denney Wright said.. "They are great players and people, and they continue to be such an important part of the Minnesota Soccer Family"
Minnesota has posted a spring record of 2-1-2 under Denney Wright. The Golden Gophers have posted wins over North Texas and Truman State. Minnesota also tied defending Big XII Champion Oklahoma State, as well as Drake, a team that defeated the Golden Gophers, 4-1, this past season.
Minnesota will complete the spring portion of its schedule this Saturday in Ames, Iowa. The Golden Gophers will face Iowa at Noon and will meet Iowa State at 4 p.m.
