Gopher Women's Track Opens Drake Relays Competition

Jacenta Spandl and Katrina Rundhaug posted fifth-place finishes to highlight the performance of the Minnesota women's track & field team in the first full day of competition at the prestigious Drake Relays on Thursday.

Spandl, a redshirt freshman, tallied a career-best score of 4,834 points in the heptathlon. Rundhaug, a true freshman, placed fifth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36 minutes, 11.33 seconds.

Three other Gophers competed in the 10,000 meters. Harper McConnell placed 11th with a time of 36:44.93, Krista Anderson finished 20th in a time of 37:37.62 and Sarah Hesser was 21st in a time of 38:09.09.

Redshirt freshman Maggie Jaunich joined Spandl in the heptathlon competition. Jaunich placed 10th with a career-best total of 4,565.

The first of many relay events were contested on Thursday. Minnesota placed eighth in the 4x1,600-meter relay as the squad of Anita Menden, Annie Wells, JoEllen Arons and Carly Emil posted a time of 20:36.84.

Competition at the Drake Relays continued through Saturday.
