Gopher Rowing Named Boat of the Week

The Golden Gopher rowing team was named the Big Ten Boat of the Week, announced by the Big Ten Conference. Minnesota defeated both Kansas and Southern Methodist last weekend in the Gophers' only home race of the season. It was the Gophers first boat of the week honor of the season and third in the history of the Gopher program.
The Maroon and Gold clocked a time of 7:19.32 on the 2,000-meter course while Kansas followed at 7:30.13 and SMU posted a time of 7:37.26. Members of Minnesota's winning crew were Katherine Nelson, Jackie Gagner, Melissa Roche, Heidi Rose, Vilma Strageyta, Beth Ratterman, Andrea Pierce, Sam Wangsgard and Jill Peters.
Minnesota will head to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Big Ten Championships, May 1. Of the Big Ten teams, three are in the top 10 of the First Varsity Eight poll. Ohio State is ranked first, Michigan State is seventh and Michigan is ranked 10th. Wisconsin holds the 13th spot, while Minnesota and Iowa are receiving votes.
