Men's Distance Runners Gather NCAA Qualifying Times

tiThe Cardinal Invitational at Stanford is one of the top meets of the season for distance runners. The meet is set up with the goal of giving its competitors the best opportunity to clock qualifying time, whether it be for NCAA Championships or Olympic competition. The distance crew of the Minnesota men's track & field team took advantage of the opportunity and recorded seven NCAA regional qualifying performances.

Andrew Carlson led a pack of four Golden Gopher 5,000-meter runners to garner NCAA regional qualifying times. Carlson placed 13th in the Section A 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 13 minutes, 48.99 seconds, the second-best time in school history. Will McComb also posted a career-best time of 13:55.91 to placed 22nd in Section A. McComb's time is the fifth best in school history.

Erik Grumstrup and Ryan Malmin competed in the Section B of the 5,000-meter run, both coming away with NCAA regional qualifying time. Grumstrup was 13th with a time of 14:11.91, while Malmin was 17th with a personal-best time of 14:15.15.

Trent Riter posted the third-best time in school history in placing eighth in Section A of the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.37, another NCAA regional qualifier. Ryan Ford was sixth in Section C with a time of 1:50.98.

Martin Robeck ran a season-best and NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:43.25 in the 1,500-meter run. Robeck finished eighth in the Section A race.

Luke Mullranin added the Gophers' final NCAA regional qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mullranin won the Section C race with a time of 9:06.85.
