Minnesota Women's Tennis Announces 2003-04 Team Awards

BuergThe University of Minnesota women's tennis program has announced the recipients of the 2003-04 team awards. Senior A ngela Buergis (Frauenfeld, Switzerland) was named the Golden Gophers' Most Valuable Player after a season which saw her named to the 2004 All-Big Ten Team.

Buergis is currently ranked 70th in the nation in singles with a 17-10 overall record and a 15-6 mark in dual matches. Minnesota's top player in singles and doubles, Buergis compiled a 7-3 record in Big Ten singles matches to lead the Golden Gophers. She teamed with sophomore Ni schela Reddy for the majority of the season at No. 1 doubles, posting a 21-15 overall record, a 9-11 dual mark and a 3-5 record in Big Ten action. Buergis has earned one of 64 berths for the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships. The singles and doubles championships will be held May 24-29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Rounding out the awards were freshman Je nna Tellefsen for Most Enthusiastic Player and sophomore S helby Rohrer as the team's Most Improved Player. In addition, Head Coach Tyler Thomson announced that Ni schela Reddy will serve as captain for the 2004-05 season.
