Women's Swimming and Diving Announces Team Awards

CThe Golden Gopher women's swimming and diving team has announced the recipients of the 2003-04 team awards. Junior swimmer Katy Coombe and junior diver Rebecca Cornthwaite were named the Most Valuable to the team for their performances in the past season.

Coombe finished her junior campaign with an impressive finish in the Big Ten Championships, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Coombe broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle in the preliminary heat with a time of 22.96. She earned second-team All-Big Ten, finishing second in the 50 free with a time of 23.08. She qualified for her first NCAA Championships this past March.

For the second time in two years, Rebecca Cornthwaite was named an All-American honorable mention. Cornthwaite finished 11th overall in the platform event with a score of 403.30. It was her third appearance at the NCAA Championships.

Senior swimmer Juleen Rodakowski was honored with the Dorothy Listina Sheppard Award. The award is given to the swimmer who best demonstrates her qualities of being a life long learner: learning things because they just want to know, values travel and getting to know those who live were you travel and simply enjoys the journey of life. The award was given to Rodakowski by the swimming and diving coaching staff.

Erika Bjorklund and Jennifer Hasling earned the most improved award, while Kate Hardt and Abby Ruess were named the hardest workers.

Minnesota's team captains have also been named for the 2004-05 season. Abbie Bowden, Colleen Morgan, Sarah Solfelt were named captains by their peers.
