Senior Rower Melissa Roche Earns All-Region Honors

theCMinnesota senior rower Melissa Roche was named as afirst-team All- Region selection, announced today by theCollegiate Rowing Coaches Association. It is the third straightseason that Roche has been named an all-region selection.

Roche rowed in every Varsity Eight race for the Golden Gophersin both the fall and spring seasons in 2003-04. As a member ofthe First Varsity Eight, Roche aided the Gophers to a 22nd-placefinish at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta and a win atthe Head of the Iowa. Minnesota then opened the spring seasonwith wins over Louisville and Iowa. The Gophers finished theregular season with a home dual win over Kansas and SMU toearn Big Ten Boat of the Week honors. Roche and Minnesotafinished fifth at the Big Ten Championships with 78 team points.Roche was named a first team All-Big Ten selection in thechampionships. The Gophers finished eighth overall in theLexus South/Central Regional Sprints and sixth overall in theregion.

The nomination criteria included: meeting eligibility rules asdefined by the institution, participating in at least 75 percent ofthe season's races in a varsity boat, and the student-athlete'scoach must be in good standing with the CRCA. The teams areselected by head coaches based on the team record in dualaction, strength of schedule, nomination rank, coaches'comments and 2,000-meter ergometer score.
