Liz Alabi Qualifies for NCAA Championships in Shot Put

Sophomore Liz Alabi earned her first trip to the NCAA Championships to highlight the Minnesota women's track & field team's performance at the NCAA Midwest Region Championships in College Station, Texas, on Saturday. Alabi placed fifth in the shot put with a career-best throw of 50 feet, 7 1/4 inches and will compete in the NCAA Championships, June 9-12, in Austin, Texas.

Melissa Steele just missed a trip to the national meet, placing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:01.63. The top five placewinners advance to the NCAA meet.

Also competing for the Gophers on Saturday was Jacenta Spandl in the javelin. She placed 16th with a throw of 140-10.

Alabi and pole vaulter Monica Stearns are the two Golden Gophers who will travel to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
