Three Golden Gophers Selected to ABCA All-Mideast Regional Teams

Glen Perkins (Stillwater, Min.) was named to the first-team as a pitcher, while Sam Steidl (outfielder) and Andy Hunter (first base) were named to the second team.

Minnesota had three players named to first and second All-Mideast Regional teams, which was tied for the second-highest total. The Golden Gophers accounted for three of the nine Big Ten players that were named to the All-Mideast Regional teams.

Perkins was recently named a Second-Team Collegiate Baseball All-American and was the 2004 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year. He was only the second Golden Gopher pitcher in school history to receive those honors joining C.J. Woodrow, who received the honors in 2002. Perkins was also named the 2004 Big Ten Most Outstanding Player of the Big Ten Tournament.

This season Perkins was 9-2 with a 2.83 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 111.1 innings pitched. He was even better in Big Ten play going 7-0 with a 1.88 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 67 innings. Those numbers in Big Ten play were either tied or alone for first in the conference.

Over the past two seasons, Perkins was 15-0 with a 2.09 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 129 innings in Big Ten play. He was 17-0, including two Big Ten Tournament games, against Big Ten teams in his career. Perkins ended up first on the Minnesota career in list in Big Ten strikeouts (139), Big Ten winning percentage (1.000, 15-0), fourth in Big Ten ERA (2.09) and second in Big Ten wins (15). Overall, Perkins was fourth in career strikeouts with 230.

Steidl was a member of a Big Ten All-Conference team in all four seasons at Minnesota. His freshman season (2001) he was named to the second-team, his sophomore season he was third-team (2002) and his final two seasons he was name First-Team All-Big Ten.

This season Steidl finished fourth in the Big Ten in batting average (.372), tied for second in hits (87), was first in runs (62), first in doubles (22) and was second in stolen bases. He was also first in runs (33) in Big Ten play. Steidl amassed 174 hits in the last two season, with exactly 87 in each of the last two seasons.

Steidl finished his career as one of only two Minnesota players in the program's history to amass over 300 career hits. Steidl finished second on the career list in hits with 309, ninth in career batting average at .363, tied for sixth in games played at 229, second in at-bats with 852, eighth in doubles with 49, sixth in total bases with 370, sixth in runs with 198 and fourth in stolen bases with 63.

Hunter finished the season second in the Big Ten in RBI (66), sixth in batting average (.366), third in total bases (131), third in slugging percentage (.606), sixth in hits (79), tied for fifth in home runs (10) and finished second in doubles (20).

In Big Ten play, Hunter lead the conference in RBI with 35, was third in batting average at .394 and was third in slugging percentage at .633.

Hunter's 66 RBI this season tied him for the fifth-highest single-season RBI total in school history. His 35 RBI in Big Ten tied for the third-highest total in conference play in school history. In 58 career Big Ten games, Hunter has now delivered 63 RBI in his first two seasons at Minnesota. After his first two seasons at Minnesota, Hunter is already 10th on the career list for RBI in Big Ten play.

Perkins was drafted last week in the first round by the Minnesota Twins, while Steidl was picked in the 12th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hunter will enter his junior season for Minnesota next season, and is currently playing in the Cape Cod league with the Brewster Whitecaps.
