The Golden Gopher softball team (33-23, 10-10) fell arguably one win shy of reaching its third straight NCAA Tournament. Minnesota fell to Northwestern, 5-2, in 11 innings in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., May 14. Eighth-seeded Michigan State shocked the field by claiming the title, as well as the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. With their string of three straight wins, the Spartans matched the Golden Gophers' 33-23 regular-season record and became the seventh team from the Big Ten to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
