Wrestling Team Signs Four to National Letters of Intent

wiThe University of Minnesota Wrestling Program has announced the signing of four student-athletes to national letters of intent. Graydon Anderson, Brendon Flynn, Travis Lang and Philip Meinert, Jr., will join the Golden Gophers for the 2004-05 season.

Anderson was a four-year letterwinner at Hudson High School and finished third at the Wisconsin State Championships at 189 pounds. He posted a 40-3 record during his senior season and a 108-38 mark for his career. Anderson led his team to a pair of conference championships, as well as a regional title. He was also a member of the football team and received honorable mention all-conference honors as a linebacker. A member of the National Honor Society, Anderson turned down an appointment at West Point Academy to enroll at the University of Minnesota. He is projected to wrestle at 184 for the Golden Gophers.

A native of Devils Lake, N.D., Flynn won two straight North Dakota Class A State Championships at 189 pounds for Devils Lake High School. Flynn compiled a 38-3 record during his senior season and was a five-year letterwinner with a career record of 140-26. Flynn won the state's triple crown with championships at the state meet, along with prep titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Flynn was also a standout on the football field and was an all-state linebacker and fullback as a senior. He is projected to wrestle at 197 pound for the Golden Gophers.

Also hailing from North Dakota, Lang joins the Golden Gophers from Bismarck High School. A five-year letterwinner, Lang was a four-time North Dakota State Champion and one-time runner-up. He helped lead his team to four state team titles and five straight dual titles. Lang compiled a 223-7 record and finished his career with 135 consecutive victories. A former FILA Cadet National Champion in Greco-Roman, he is projected to wrestle at 125 pounds for Minnesota.

A six-year letterwinner at Princeton High School, Meinert was a two-time Minnesota State Championship participant and holds school records for wins in a season and in a career. Meinert was a four-time all-conference selection and posted 42 wins and 200 takedowns during his senior season. An academic all-state selection, Meinert is a member of his school's honor roll with a 3.518 grade-point-average. A former member of Princeton's varsity football and baseball teams, Meinert was coached by his father, Phillip, Sr., and was a prep teammate of current Golden Gopher heavyweight Justin Bronson. He is projected to wrestle at either 149 or 157 pounds for Minnesota.

The quartet joins fall signees Nick Davis and Tyler Safratowich.
