Gophers Continue Competition at Olympic Track Trials

OlympiTravis Brandstatter stands in 18th place after the first day of the decathlon competition at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday. Brandstatter has compiled a point total of 3,762 through five events.

Brandstatter, the Big Ten champion and an All-American in the event, started the day by running a time of 11.47 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He posted a marks of 22 feet, 5 inches in the long jump and 41-8 1/2 in the shot put before clearing a height of 6-4 _ in the high jump. Brandstatter ran a time of 49.55 in the 400 meters to complete the first day of the decathlon. Saturday will begin with the 110-meter, Brandstatter's best event.

Former Gopher Chad Johnson placed eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 13:43.24. Another former Gopher, Monica Stearns tied for 15th in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13-5 1/4.

Karl Erickson competed in his second event of the Olympic Trials, the discus. After fouling in his first attempt, Erickson landed a throw of 180-8. He fouled in his final attempts as well and finished in 17th place. Erickson is the three-time defending Big Ten champion in the event. Last week, Erickson placed 13th in the shot put at the Trials with an effort of 60-6 1/2.
