Gophers Continue Action at Summer National Championships

frThe members of the Golden Gopher men's and women's swim teams competed five events of the fourth day of the 2004 ConocoPhillips National Championships, in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Gopher men's 800 free relay placed second overall. Minnesota's relay of Adam Mitchell, Terry Silkaitis, Sean McCaffrey and David Moulder finished second overall. The foursome clocked a time of 7:38.41 in the timed finals.

Mitchell also competed in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing sixth overall. Mitchell clocked a time of 58.32 in the preliminaries and bettered his time in the finals in 57.82. Katie Wind competed in the women's 100 back finishing 34th overall.

Justin Mortimer looked for a sweep of the events, but finished 11th after prelims. He went on to win the B Final with a time of 3:54.34. Mortimer placed first in three races earlier in the championships for his first three national titles. Zachary Wood also competed in the race placing 34th in 4:10.17.

Former Gopher Keri Hehn added a seventh-place showing in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a 1:11.81. It was the second A Final event of the week after finishing fifth overall in the 100 breaststroke. Bridget McCoy also competed in the event placing 41st overall. On the men's side, Alejandro Jacobo and Sean Kelly competed in the C Final. Jacobo finished 18th overall (1:04.92), while Kelly finished 20th overall (1:05.20).

Former men's swimmer Chad Krastins competed in the 100 fly and placed 10th in a time of 54.98. Lucas Peterson also competed in the event finishing 28th overall.
