Williams, a junior from Edina, Minn., posted a time of 22:48.7 over the 6-kilometer course to win her first collegiate medalist honor. Williams won the race by over seven seconds with runner-up Drake's Ashley Anklam breaking the Gophers' hold on the top 10 places.
Golden Gopher senior Zoe Nagell finished third in a time of 22:58.4. Other scoring Gophers were Harper McConnell in fourth (23:19.5), Jen Hess in fifth (23: 21.5), and Ladia Albertson-Junkans in sixth (23:32.4).
"This was our first big test of the season and we responded very well," said Golden Gopher head coach Gary Wilson. "Lauren and Zoe worked very well together up front and our freshmen ran very well considering the race was their very first 6-kilometer competition."
Wilson was also excited to see Williams win her first collegiate race. "That was pretty cool." Wilson replied about Williams' victory. "What we are seeing with Lauren is three years of hard work beginning to pay off. She is also coming off a great summer of training."
The Golden Gophers' next competition is in two weeks when they host the Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25.
