Fifth-year senior Andrew Carlson, running in his first race since 2002 after missing the 2003 season with a hernia injury, paced the Gophers with a second-place finish. Carlson covered the 4-mile course in a time of 19:39.8. BYU's Josh Rohatinshy won the individual crown with a time of 19:31.9.
Also scoring for the Gophers were Ryan Ford in fifth place (20:23.1), Ryan Malmin in ninth (20:38.1), Antonio Vega in 10th (20:38.9) and Justin Gruenwald in 13th (20:45.8). "We performed relatively well today, especially our top five or six runners," said Golden Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia. "The course has a lot hills and I think the altitude got to us a bit. Still, I'm pleased. This was our best performance competing against BYU at this meet."
Plasencia was also excited about the performance of the Gophers' fifth finisher, true freshman Gruenwald. "Justin did a nice job in his first collegiate race," said Plasencia. "You're never quite sure how a true freshman will perform but Justin really stepped up."
Minnesota's next competition is in two weeks when the Gophers host the Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25.
