Gopher Women 13th at Griak Invitational, Providence Wins Title

t No. 2 Providence won its first Griak Women's Gold Race title since 1998 at the Griak Invitational held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn., on Saturday. The Friars, led by Griak champion Kim Smith, tallied 58 team points to win its fourth Griak team title.

Arizona State, the 2003 champion, placed second with 81 points. Minnesota placed 13th.

Smith established a new Griak record, covering the 6-kilomter course in a time of 20:10. The Griak runner-up was Wartburg senior Missy Buttry, the defending NCAA Division III champion, at 20:33.

"Last year, the Griak was my first real collegiate meet and it set me up well for the NCAAs," said Smith. "I am hoping that is does the same for me this year."

Minnesota was paced by Lauren Williams, who finished in 44th place in a time of 22:21. Also scoring for the Golden Gophers were Zoe Nagell (22:34), Harper McConnell (22:57), Jen Hess (23:02) and Annie Yetzer (23:09).

"We ran a gutty race as a team," said Golden Gopher head coach Gary Wilson. "It's a tough team race and I was pleased with our pack."
