The 2004-05 Golden Gopher softball team will get its first game action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. Minnesota will host Wisconsin- Superior in a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30. The Golden Gophers will then host Concordia on Friday afternoon. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.
Minnesota enters the 2005 campaign with high expectations after narrowly missing out on its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Gophers returns three of their top four pitchers and seven of their eight starters in the field, highlighted by All-Mideast Region catcher Megan Higginbotham.
The biggest question mark for Minnesota is how the team replaces All-Big Ten pitcher Piper Marten and four-year starter Hailee Nanchy at first base.
Minnesota kicks off its 2005 season on Feb. 9 at the Metrodome against Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Gophers host their annual Metrodome Softball Classic on Feb. 10-13.
