Minnesota has 19 letterwinners returning from the first team in school history to claim the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. The Golden Gophers finished 38-23 in 2003, and advanced to the NCAA Regionals. Minnesota also won its third straight Big Ten regular season title, marking the first time since 1968-70 that the Golden Gophers claimed three straight conference titles.
The Golden Gophers welcome nine true freshman, two four-year school transfers and one junior college transfer to the program. Joining the nine true freshman are five freshman who redshirted the 2004 season for Minnesota. The Golden Gophers also have five seniors returning this season, eight juniors and 10 sophomores.
Highlighting the returnees are First-Team All-Big Ten first baseman Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.), along with Second-Team All-Big Ten catcher Jake Elder (Delta, British Columbia) and second-team designated hitter Mike Mee (Richfield, Minn.).
Minnesota also returns Third-Team All-Big Ten shortstop Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn.), third-team second baseman Luke MacLean (Bloomington, Minn.) and third-team third baseman David Hrncirik (Madison, Wis.).
