MSD: Gophers Win All 10 Events In Meet With Hawaii

The seventh-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming team completed its winter training trip to Hawaii by winning all 10 events in an open meet with No. 22 Hawaii on Tuesday in Honolulu. The meet was not team scored. Junior Adam Mitchell and senior Terry Silkaitis led the way for the Gophers, each winning two individual events.

Silkaitis won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. He posted a time of 20.45 to win the 50 free, besting teammate Igor Cerensek who touched the wall in 20.72. Silkaitis later claimed the 100 free, coasting to the wall in 44.42. Cerensek again took second in 45.67.

Mitchell finished first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. He clocked a 1:50.48 in the 200 IM to beat teammate Justin Mortimer who finished in 1: 51.13. Mitchell won the 100 back in 50.97 while fellow Gopher David Plummer was second in 51.13.

Senior Sean McCaffrey touched first in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.04, followed by Tyler Schmidt in 142.81. Senior Neil Osten won the 100 butterfly in 49.84, followed by teammate Lucas Petersen in 50.48.

Mortimer cruised to an easy win in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:28.18. Travis Beckerle touched second in 4:38.35. Sean Kelly was the other individual winner for the Gophers in the 100 breaststroke. He finished first in 57.86, followed by Nate Bernier in 57.97.

The Gophers also won both relay events. The 200 medley relay team of Dan Berve, Sean Kelly, Neil Osten and Igor Cerensek won in 1:31.49. The 200 freestyle relay team of Osten, Silkaitis, Ales Volcansek and Mitchell was victorious in 1: 21.09.

The Gophers return to action on Saturday, January 22 when they host Iowa and North Dakota at the University Aquatic Center. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
