Alvarez finished among the top three in three events, winning the floor exercise with a score of 9.575, taking second in the pommel horse with an 8.850 and earning third place on the vault with a mark of 9.250. Mays added a third place finish on the still rings with a score of 9.425 and took fourth on the vault, registering a 9.20.
Head coach Mike Burns was disappointed with the loss, but was encouraged with the effort.
"We were strong tonight, but we were not at our sharpest," Burns said. "It's a long season and we've got to get a few more routines down, but there were some bright spots. There is great potential on this team. Kyle True really stood out tonight - he was only in two events, but he really was a knockout. Clinton Mays struggled early on but he has really improved at his strength events. He didn't have excellent scores, but his high bar routine really inspired the team."
They (Ohio State) have a very strong team. They have a history of success and we need to get to that level. The guys on this team are hungry and we have the potential to get to that level."
The Gophers will host Illinois next Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m., at the Sports Pavilion.
