CHR: Dance Team Captures Third Straight National Title

January 16, 2005 - The University of Minnesota Dance Team captured its third national championship in three years at the 2005 Dance Team Championships, which took place at the Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 15-16. The Gophers became the first team in more than 10 years to win three consecutive titles after winning their first championship at the 2003 competition. In addition, the Dance Team also competed in the "hip hop" category where it earned its second consecutive fourth-place finish.

The Dance Team was led by five seniors this year: Kara Schutz, Marisa Slad, Lindsey Carter, Captain Jenny Leuer, and Captain Niki LaGrano.

The University of Minnesota spirit squads and Goldy Gopher also competed at the UCA/ UDA cheer and dance national championships. Goldy took third place in the mascot competition. The Gopher cheerleaders, led by Captain Dallas Dietrich, received eighth place after a stunning performance full of difficulty and enthusiasm. Also, the cheerleaders received an unbelievable score of 15/15 for their crowd tape, a vital part of the competition.
