MTF: Brandstatter Wins Heptathlon at UNI Invite

InvitSenior Travis Brandstatter totaled 5,522 points en route to claiming the heptathlon title at the UNI Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Brandstatter's score, a personal-best, provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Competing in the gold division of the heptathlon, Brandstatter established new personal-bests in the 60 meter dash (7.26) and the long jump (23-2 1/2).

Senior co-captain Bryant Howe also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the high jump. Howe cleared a personal-best 7-2 1/4 on his second attempt to finish as the runner-up.

Sophomore Matt Engebretson also captured a heptathlon title while competing in the meet's purple division. Engebretson tallied 4,827 points and set personal records in the 60 meter dash (7.32) and the long jump (22-7 1/4).

Junior Ato Taylor marked a personal- best effort in the triple jump, leaping 46-5 1/2 to claim third-place.

Gopher throwers meanwhile competed at the Carleton College Open in Northfield, Minn on Friday. Senior Andy Tilstra improved his NCAA provisionally qualifying distance marking 64-2 1/2 in the weight throw. The Gophers swept the top three spots as senior Curt Schoenfelder (61-4 3/4) and sophomore Adam Schnaible (58-4 3/4) finished second and third respectively. Schnaible also took the shot put title with a throw of 51-10 1/2.

Minnesota next travels to Lincoln, Neb. to compete in the Husker Invitational on February 4 and 5.
