Janel McCarville became just the 10th player in Big Ten history to collect 1,000 career points and rebounds as the senior All-American led No. 11/11 Minnesota to a 74-49 victory at Wisconsin on Thursday. McCarville scored 15 points and 17 rebounds and currently has 1,518 points and 1,008 rebounds in her Golden Gopher career.
The Golden Gophers top the Big Ten with a 3-0 record, 12-2 overall. Minnesota used its trademark pressure defense to hold its third straight team to less than 50 points in a game. The Gophers forced the Badgers into shooting 26.6 percent from the floor while holding Wisconsin scoreless for over a 14-minute span in the second half.
"We really stepped up defensively in this game," said Golden Gopher Pam Borton. "We very happy to pick a road game in the Big Ten."
The Gophers shot out of the blocks offensively hitting nine of their first 12 shots in the game's first eight minutes. Shannon Schonrock hit a pair of three-pointers in the stretch, while Shannon Bolden and Jamie Broback also netted triples. Kelly Roysland banked home a lay-up to give Minnesota a 23-12 lead and a double-digit cushion the Gophers would not relinquish. Nine straight points by McCarville helped the Gophers take a 40-27 lead at halftime.
Wisconsin's leading scorer Jolene Anderson hit a three-pointer at the 15:36 mark but the Badgers' next field goal attempt was blocked by McCarville and started a streak of 22 straight missed field goals attempts that spanned over 14 minutes before Anderson scored the next Wisconsin basket with 1:24 left in the game.
McCarville joined the 1,000-career rebound club with 15:07 left in the second half when she first blocked the shot of Badger Danielle Ward, then grabbed the rebound. Of the 10 Big Ten players with the career double-double, four of them are Gophers as McCarville joined Laura Coenen, Linda Roberts and Molly Tadich.
The Gophers' defensive stopper, Bolden did a masterful defensive job on Anderson, who entered the game averaging over 18 points a game and ranked fourth in the conference in scoring. Anderson finished with 11 points while hitting on just five of 20 attempts from the floor. In addition to her defensive effort, Bolden added 11 points.
Bolden wasn't the only Gopher to have an outstanding night on the defensive end of the court. Schonrock held Wisconsin senior Stephanie Rich scoreless on a 0-7 shooting performance. Rich scored her only points on two free throws late on the game with Gopher reserves on the court. Schonrock also chipped in 11 points, hitting on 3-of-5 three pointers.
Broback was the fourth Gopher in double figures with 10 points. McCarville scored all 15 of her points in the first half but contributed five assists in the second half to finish the game with team-high six.
Minnesota's next game is Sunday when the Golden Gophers play host to New Mexico at 2 p.m.
