MGYM: Gophers Finish Fifth At Windy City Invite

scoreThe University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team opened the 2005 season by finishing fifth with a score of 212.750 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill. Illinois won the meet with a score of 221.800, while Ohio State was second (220.100), Michigan was third (218.225), Iowa was fourth (217.300) and the host school, Illinois- Chicago was sixth (205.325).

The Gophers were led by senior Guillermo Alvarez, who won the vault with a score of 9.65 and took third on the pommel horse and in the all-around with a score of 54.025.

"Guillermo had a solid performance tonight and was among the top five in almost every event," said first-year head men's gymnastics coach Mike Burns. "He gave us a strong effort across the board, which was great for this being only our first meet.

"We started strong tonight, but just didn't have quite enough gas to finish, but I feel good about how we competed. I see a lot of potential out of this team and we are definitely on the road to where we need to go," said Burns.
