Border battles have raged for decades on the gridiron, but now the sheets of ice across the state are ushering in a new era as the University of Minnesota men’s hockey team will compete with the three other Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) teams in the state of Minnesota this season for the inaugural DQ Cup.

Golden Gopher, Bulldog, Husky and Maverick fans have celebrated the rivalries for years and after March 3 there will be a real piece of hardware sitting in a collegiate trophy case providing year-long bragging rights for the victors. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota compete in a dozen games that will combine to determine a winner of the DQ Cup.

Here is how it works. The winner of the DQ Cup will be determined on a point system in six head-to-head contests. The winner of each qualifying will receive five DQ Cup points, while the loser will receive zero points. If any of the qualifying games should end in a tie, both teams will receive two points. A tiebreaker system exists if there is a tie for the highest number of total points at the end of the DQ Cup schedule.
