Brittony Chartier and Erica McKenzie helped the No. 4 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team to a 1-0 win over the No. 8 Mercyhurst Lakers, tonight in Erie, Pa., in front of 1,100 fans. With the win, the Gophers improve to 4-1-0 overall, while handing Mercyhurst its second loss of the season at 3-2-0.

Although both Minnesota and Mercyhurst had scoring chances, both teams remained at 0-0 after the first period of hockey. Minnesota had 12 shots on goal to Mercyhurst’s nine.

The Gophers broke the scoreless game with a power-play goal at 11:52 of the second period. Erica McKenzie scored her fourth goal of the season, second on the power play, on a rebound attempt. Melanie Gagnon started the play passing it to Gigi Marvin. Marvin attempted a shot, but was stopped by Mercyhurst goalie Laura Hosier. McKenzie was there to put in the goal. The Gophers scored on one of three power- play shots attempted. Minnesota had 10 shots on goal in the period to MC’s nine.

The Lakers pulled Hosier to add the extra skater with 1:22 remaining in the game. The Lakers attempted four shots, three of which was saved by Chartier.

Minnesota’s goal would be all that Chartier would need to capture the win. In five games played, Chartier earned three shut outs. She now holds a 4-1-0 record. Chartier stopped nine shots in the first, nine in the second and 12 in the third for a three-period total of 30. She tied her career high when she had 30 saves against No. 1 St. Lawrence.

The Gophers will look for the sweep, tomorrow at 3 p.m. (ET).
