WHK: No. 4 Gophers Defeat No. 2 Bulldogs, 4-1

The Gophers took a commanding lead in the first period, scoring two goals within the first nine minutes of the game. Ross deflected an Anya Miller slap shot to score her second power-play goal of the season at 2:25 of the first period. The second assist was credited to Erica McKenzie. Ross helped the Gophers to an early 2-0 lead when she scored her second goal of the period at 8:47 of the first. Whitney Graft fired the puck from behind the net and centered it to Ross, who was camped in front of the net. The Gophers scored two goals on 12 shots, including three on the power play. The Bulldogs fired off 10 shots in the first, but were not able to convert.
UMD's Jill Sales scored an unassisted goal at 3:52 to cut the deficit by one goal, but Minnesota answered back with a goal less than two minutes later at 5:01 of the second period. Ross tallied her fifth goal of the season and her third of the night with Marley Wournell tallying the assist. It was Wournell's first career point in a Gopher uniform. Ross scored her third goal on just three shots in the game. UMD scored a goal in the second, but one of the Bulldogs' best chances all night came during the penalty kill. UMD's Noemie Marin blocked a shot and had a breakaway with 6:00 left in the second period, but Gopher goalie Brittony Chartier denied Marin the goal and made the save.
With the Gophers up, 3-1 and under 1:00 remaining in the game, UMD pulled goalie Ritta Schaublin. It took the Gophers just :02 to score an empty net goal. Wournell tallied her first career goal and her second point of the night at 19:19 of the third period. She scored on her lone shot of the night. Following the goal, Schaublin returned to net to complete the game. The Gophers stopped all 12 shots on goal in the third period. The Bulldogs had 10 shots in the first, 10 in the second and 12 in the third. Of their 32 shots 16 came during the power play. Minnesota held UMD 0-9 on the power play, while the Gophers converted one goal in six opportunities on five shots.
Chartier had yet another stellar performance in goal for the Gophers, setting a career-high 31 saves. Chartier had 10 saves in the first, nine in the second and 12 in the third. One of her best saves of the evening came early in the third period when Sales was camped out on the far side during one of the Bulldogs' power plays. Sales took a cross-ice pass at the back door and rifled in a shot, but Chartier slide across the crease for the save.
