MSD: Gophers Swim Past No. 9 Indiana 163-137

The 11th-ranked Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team prevailed over No. 9 Indiana, 163-137, in a highly anticipated Big Ten dual meet this afternoon at University Aquatic Center. The meet was a rematch of the 2005 Big Ten Championships was decided on the final event when the Gophers won the 400 freestyle relay and preserved a second straight conference championship. Minnesota improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Gophers won nine of the 16 events including both relays, where they posted the top two finishers. Minnesota won the afternoon’s first event, the 200 medley relay in 1:29.52. The winning team consisted of Dan Berve, Colin Lee- To, Neil Osten and Mario Delac. The Gophers B team took second place in a time of 1:30.67. The event gave the Gophers a 13- point lead off the bat. In the other relay, the 400 free relay, Minnesota also went 1-2. The winning team of Mike Woodson, Delac, Adam Mitchell and Igor Cerensek finished first in 2: 57.92 while the B team took second in 3:02.74.

Mitchell led the way for the Gophers individually, winning the 200 individual medley and the 200 freestyle. He cruised to an easy victory in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:48.62 while Indiana’s Todd Patrick was second over four seconds later in 1:52.74. Mitchell won the 200 free in 1:37.45 while Patrick finished second again in 1:38.48.

Freshman Colin Lee-To claimed first in the 100 breaststroke for the second straight week in a time of 55.86. Andrew Knoechel was second in 57.14. Delac powered to a win in the 100 freestyle in a time of 44.62, just ahead of Indiana’s Colin Russell (44.99).

In the 200 backstroke, David Plummer finished first in a time of 1:48.43 and Woodson was next in 1:49.12. Berve posted a solid time of 49.34 to win the 100 butterfly while IU’s Ben Hesen was second in 49.81. Sean Kelly was the Gophers other event winner, touching first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:04.86.

Indiana kept itself in the meet by finishing 1-2-3 in both diving events. The Hoosiers’ Taylor Roberts won the 1-meter event (362.33) while Ryan Fagan won the 3-meter (357.68).

The Gophers will be in action for the third straight week next Friday and Saturday when they host North Carolina and North Dakota at University Aquatic Center. The meet begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
