Phil Kessel (Madison, Wis.), Jeff Frazee (Burnsville, Minn.), Ryan Potulny (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Danny Irmen (Fargo, N.D.) are picking up preseason accolades as the Golden Gophers head into the 2005-06 campaign. Two of the top college hockey webistes, Inside College Hockey (INCH) and U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) released their preseason teams today.

Kessel, a freshman forward, was named to INCH's Preseason All-America Second Team and All-Rookie Team, and USCHO's Preseason All-Rookie Team. Frazee, a freshman goaltender, earned INCH and USCHO All-Rookie Team honors. Potulny, a junior center was named to the All-USCHO Third Team, while Irmen, a junior forward, was named Preseason Honorable Mention by USCHO.

Kessel enters the regular season as the nation's top incoming forward, while Frazee is ranked as the top freshman goaltender. Last night in a 4-3 exhibition win over the University of Alberta, Kessel recorded a goal and an assist, while Frazee picked up the win with 16 saves. Potulny and Irmen are coming off a breakout 2004-05 season which saw them earn All-WCHA Third Team honors after posting 41- and 43-points seasons, repectively.

The top-ranked Golden Gophers open the 2005-06 regular season with a non-conference home series against CCHA foe Alaska Fairbanks on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 14-15.
