Gophers Fall, 6-2, to No. 3 Wisconsin

The University of women's hockey team fell 6-2, to the No. 3 Wisconsin Badgers, tonight in Ridder Arena. With the loss, the Gophers fall to 9-5-0 overall and 4-4 -0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Like last night, the Badgers struck first, scoring a goal at 3:37 of the first period. Tia Hanson tallied her fifth goal of the season, going top-shelf on Gopher goalie Brittony Chartier. The Badgers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Nikki Burrish scored again at 5:51. of the first period.

Minnesota responded when Anya Miller scored a power-play goal at 6:48 of the first period. Miller wound up for the slap shot, scoring her second goal of the season with Bobbi Ross getting the assist. However, the Badgers scored at 19:15 to put the game back to a two-goal lead.

Minnesota was called for a checking from behind penalty at the end of the first period, which carried over into the second period. Wisconsin took advantage, scoring at :27 into the period. Sara Bauer then added to the Badgers' lead when she scored at 3:43 of the second on a power-play attempt.

Minnesota added its second goal of the game at 6:11 in the third period. Jenelle Philipczyk scored her second goal in three games and her third goal of the season with linemate Marley Wournell credited with the assist. The Badgers added their final blow of the game at 13:01 of the third when Jinelle Zaugg scored a power play goal.

Chartier played 23:23 of the game and was pulled after the Badgers' fifth goal. Kim Hanlon allowed just one power-play goal in 36:17 played. It is the third time Hanlon has seen action this season. Chartier was credited with the loss.

The Badgers series was the last home series for the Gophers in the 2005 calendar year. Minnesota is idle next weekend and resumes action, Dec. 2-3. The Gophers take on North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. Minnesota will then travel to Minnesota State, Dec. 9-10 in Mankato, Minn. The Gophers will broadcast the MSU series on gophersports.com.
