Minnesota Leads After First Day of Ohio State Invitational

The No. 9 Minnesota men's swimming and diving team won four of five events and
leads after the first day of competition at the Ohio State Invitational at Peppe Aquatic
Center in Columbus, Ohio. Minnesota scored 374 points while Ohio State is second
with 227 and Penn State is third with 135 points. Senior Adam
Mitchell led the way by
achieving an NCAA automatic qualifying time en route to winning the 200 individual
medley.


Mitchell clocked a 200 IM winning time of 1:46.30 while Ohio State's Nate King was
second in 1:47.31. Sophomore David Plummer finished third in
1:51.46 and freshman
Evan Bernier was seventh in
1:53.54.


The Gophers started the evening competition with a win in the 200 freestyle relay.
The team of Igor Cerensek, Ales
Volcansek, Mario Delac and Michael Woodson
clocked an NCAA B cut time of 1:20.00 to pick up the victory. Ohio State was second
in 1:20.86 and the Gophers' B team was third with a time of 1:21.56.


Volcansek came back to win the 50 freestyle in an NCAA B cut standard time of
20.21. Four other Gophers reached the final, including Cerensek in second (20.26),
Delac in fourth (20.47), Colin Lee-To in fifth (20.57) and
Woodson in seventh (20.64).


The Gophers claimed the top two spots in the 500 freestyle. Senior Travis
Beckerle
won in an NCAA B cut time of 4:25.17 to barely edge teammate Zach
Wood who took
second in 4:25.49. Junior Drew Knoechel touched fourth in 4:29.89.


Minnesota closed the evening with a second place finish in the 400 medley relay. The
Gopher team of Plummer, Lee-To, Mitchell and Delac clocked a 3:15.99. The time was
an NCAA B cut mark but wasn't enough to defeat Ohio State who posted a winning
time of 3:15.22.


The competition continues with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
