Jamie Broback tallied her third career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 15/15 Minnesota to a 52-35 win over Indiana in Bloomington on Feb. 24.
"This was a game between two good defensive teams and it wasn't pretty at times," said Golden Gopher head coach Pam Borton. "Once again we had some people, like Jamie Broback, step up with Janel (McCarville) in foul trouble."
The Gophers needed players to step up their play as Janel McCarville picked up her second foul and headed to the bench with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. The Hoosiers (10-16, 3-12) were unable to take advantage of McCarville's absence as well as 11 Minnesota first-half turnovers. The Gophers, behind two three-point field goals by Shannon Schonrock, held a 27-24 lead at halftime.
Minnesota went to their inside game to open the second half with an 8-0 run. McCarville and Broback each scored four points in the rally, Indiana's Carrie Smith finally broke the Hoosiers into the scoring column in the second half with a three-point play at the 14:41 mark.
Both teams struggled to score over the next five minutes. Indiana closed to within seven points at 38-31 on a Jamie Gathing jumper. The momentum swung Indiana's direction as McCarville drove to the basket and was called for an offensive foul, her fourth, and took a seat on the bench.
The Gophers responded defensively with their senior leader on the bench. The Gophers built on their lead with an 11-0 run while McCarville looked on from the sidelines. Included in the stretch were Schonrock's third triple of the game and a three-point play by Natasha Williams. When McCarville returned to the game six minutes later, Minnesota held a commanding 49-31 lead.
Schonrock finished with 12 points as the only other Gopher in double figures. Shannon Bolden added nine points and nine rebounds.
The 35 points scored by Indiana is the second lowest points total allowed. The Gophers set the school record earlier this season when they held Detroit to just 34 points.
