MSD: Day One of the Minnesota Challege Complete

oAs a warm-up competition to the Big Ten Championships in three weeks, the eighth-ranked men's swimming and diving squad took to the pool at the University Aquatic Center competing in the first day of the Minnesota Challenge Friday.

Justin Mortimer remained unbeaten over the last two weeks with an easy victory in the 500 freestyle. He posted a time of 4:22.88, followed by Travis Beckerle with a time of 4:28.15. Mortimer came back with another victory in the next event, the 200 individual medley. He touched first in 1:49.57, narrowly edging Adam Mitchell, who touched in 1:49.81. Russ Payne finished third in 1:51.02.

Minnesota captured the top two spots in the 50 freestyle with Terry Silkaitis touching first in a time of 20.42. He was followed by Mario Delac in second, posting a time of 20.48.

The Gophers were also victorious in the 400 medley relay. The team of Adam Mitchell, Igor Cerensek, Tyler Schmidt, and Pavel Zhuravlev clocked a winning time of 3:29.04.

The Minnesota Challenge continues Saturday beginning at noon.
