BB: Varsity Squad Defeats Pro-Alumni 9-1

Junior shortstop Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn.) reached base five times, and was four-for-four with a double, a run and an RBI. Sophomore catcher Kevin Carlson (Edina, Minn.) also had a multi- hit day as he went two- for-three with a triple, an RBI and one run.
Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.) had a game- high two runs and was one of seven Gophers with an RBI in the game. Aaron Larson (Lakeville, Minn.), John Arlt (Lakeville, Minn.), Tony Leseman (St. Paul, Minn.) and Dan Thompson (Sun Praire, Wis.)
Senior Josh Krogman (St. Cloud, Minn.) picked up the win in the Pro-Alumni Game for a second straight year, as he started and gave up one run in two and two thirds innings. Sophomore Josh Oslin (Mora, Minn.) pitched two shutout innings for the varsity squad, giving up only one hit, while Marcus McKenzie (Minnetonka, Minn.) pitched two perfect innings. Cole DeVries also pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits.
Matt Loberg gave took the loss for the Pro- Alumni, giving up three runs, one earned in two innings of work. Sophomore John Gaub (South St. Paul, Minn.) also tossed a one and a third perfect innings with two strikeouts for the Pro- Alumni.
The varsity squad started the scoring the bottom of the second with three runs to go up 3-0. Thompson started the scoring with an RBI single with one out and the bases loaded to score senior catcher Jake Elder (Delta, British Columbia). Sean Kommerstad (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Leseman came around to score in the next at-bat on an error.
Sam Steidl led off the top of the third with a triple, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luke Appert to cut the lead to 3-1. However, the varsity squad added a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout to bring home Hunter to make the score 4-1.
Minnesota expanded the lead to 9-1 with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Larson brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1. Fornasiere singled home Joe Maciej (Elk River, Minn.) to move the score to 6-1. Two batters later, Hunter doubled home Fornasiere to push the lead to 7- 1. Carlson brought home Hunter with an RBI triple to move the lead to 8- 1. Arlt finally finished the five-run innings with an RBI double, which brought home Carlson to make it 9-1.
Steidl went one-for-three with a run, while Appert knocked in the only run for the Pro-Alumni. Robb Quinlan, Jack Hannahan, Greg Olson, Matt Scanlon, Aron Amundson and Steve Huls each had one hit for the Pro-Alumni side as well.
Minnesota will open up its 2005 season at Fayetteville, Ark. against 2004 College World Series participant Arkansas on Feb. 25 at 2:35 p.m. The Golden Gophers will finished the series against the Razorbacks on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1:05 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1:05 p.m. Minnesota will also host No. 7 South Carolina, Pepperdine and New Orleans in the Dairy Queen Classic on Mar. 4-6.
