MGYM: Alvarez Named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week

Alvarez was the Big Ten's highest finisher in the all-around competition at the Winter Cup, taking second overall with a score of 53.115. Alvarez also won the preliminaries of the floor exercise with a score of 9.10, while finishing second on the vault (9.556). The three- time All-Big Ten honoree concluded the weekend with two second-place showings on both the pommel horse (9.000) and the vault (9.275) in the event finals. With his performance, he was selected to the U.S. National Team by USA Gymnastics.
Alvarez claims his fourth career Conference Gymnast of the Week accolade as he was also honored during the 2003 season on Feb. 5, Feb. 12 and March 5.
Alvarez and the Gophers will next compete against Michigan this Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Sports Pavilion at 2 p.m.
