ROW: Gophers Open Spring Session with A Sweep Over Louisville

The No. 24 University of Minnesota rowing team opened its 2005 spring season with strong showing against Louisville, today, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Golden Gophers won all four events contested.

Minnesota's First Varsity Eight defeated Louisville with a time of 6:40 to 6:42. The Gophers had Megan Flannery as the coxswain, Beth Ratterman at stroke, Cheryl Wick, Jillian Casey, Vilma Stragyte, Laura Jatautaite, Lida Storch and Berit Tomten at bow. Minnesota also added a win in the Second Varsity Eight race. The boat of coxswain Kristi Branigan, Jenna Buskohl at stroke, Katie Biese, Sally Olson, Andrea Pierce, Sam Wangsgard, Katie Engel, Megan Stuhlfaut and Rachel Hotkowski at bow won the race in 6:59.2. Louisville finished with a time of 7:02.5

The Gophers had two shells in the Varsity Four competition. The Minnesota A boat of coxswain Leah Gross, Tracey Tallman, Tina Cho, Heidi Bechtel and Shauna Frank clocked a time of 7:48.1. The Minnesota B boat of Kaja Tally, Liz Ponder at stroke, Maggie Armstrong, Jennifer Sharpe and Angela Reesman chipped in a time of 7:56.9. Louisville, who competed in its first Varsity Four event, finished third with a time of 8:03.4

The Minnesota novice team also competed in the event. The Gophers, who split their A and B teams placed first and second in the Novice Eight event. Minnesota's A team won the race with a time of 7:48.1, while Minnesota B clocked a time of 7:56.9. Louisville came in third with a time of 8:03.4

The Gophers' next action in March 19, when they compete against No. 10 Tennessee, in Knoxville, Tenn.
