MGYM: Gophers Finish Sixth At Big Ten Championships

withThe University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team finished in sixth place at the 2005 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Gophers totaled their second-highest team score of the season with 216.400 points. Ohio State won the team title with a score of 225.350, while Illinois finished second (224.125), Michigan took third (222.775) and Penn State (220.500) and Iowa (219.800) rounded out the top five.
Gopher senior gymnast Guillermo Alvarez took third place in the all- around with a score of 55.475, which represents his second-best all- around score of his career. Sophomore Jacob Lee was 11th in the all- around competition with a 52.150.
Alvarez advanced to tomorrow night's event finals by winning the preliminaries of the floor exercise with a career-best score of 9.825. He also qualified for the finals in vault by taking second with a 9.500 and the pommel horse, finishing fifth with a mark of 9.450.
Alvarez will be in action again tomorrow night, March 26, in the Big Ten Championships event finals.
