Minnesota enters the game with a 6-11 overall record. Last year, Minnesota won its third straight regular-season Big Ten title with a 21-10 record. Michigan finished third at 19 -13. This will be the third straight year, that the Golden Gophers and Wolverines have opened the Big Ten season against each other. Last year the two teams split a four-game series in Ann Arbor, and in 2003 Minnesota won an abbreviated two-game series against Michigan.
Minnesota has won four of its last five Big Ten openers and four straight Big Ten home openers. The Golden Gophers had won four straight Big Ten openers heading into last year, before dropping last year's opener to Michigan. Minnesota has not lost a Big Ten home opener since 2000 when it dropped its home opener to Ohio State. Minnesota will be playing its first home Big Ten series in the Metrodome since 2002.
