After its two scheduled games at the Worth Invite were rained out, the Golden Gopher softball team faced Nevada at Golden West Junior College in Huntington Beach, Calif., late Friday night. The Wolfpack defeated Minnesota, 5-2.

The Golden Gophers took a 1-0 second-inning lead as sophomore Megan Higginbotham doubled, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a pass ball.

Nevada's Brittany Lorenzen tied it up in the third, smacking a two-out double over the head of the centerfielder, scoring Kristin Stith from first base. A single and a walk loaded the bases for Lindsey Hall, who was given new life when the first baseman Valerie Alston lost a foul pop up in the lights. Hall followed with a single to left, scoring Lorenzen for the 2-1 lead.

Nevada broke it open with three runs in the fourth, loading the bases with a pair of walks and a single with one out. Lorenzen walked to drive in the first run and was followed by Candice Rainwater, who singled back up the middle, scoring a pair for the 5-1 lead.

Minnesota added another run in the seventh on an infield hit by Stephanie Sward for the final tally. Sward finished the day with two hits.

Nevada starter Jordan McPherson registered her first eight outs on strikeouts (and 14 of 21 overall) before a ground ball snapped the string to end the third.

Minnesota will face No. 24 Pacific and No. 20 Oregon State today. Check out titansports.org for up-to-date information.
