SB: Higginbotham Named Big Ten Player of the Week

PlayerFor the second time in her career, sophomore catcher Megan Higginbotham has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. Higginbotham batted .857 (12-for-14) with two home runs, three doubles and eight RBI as the Golden Gophers earned four straight wins.

In a two-game sweep of North Dakota State last Thursday, she went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Minnesota's pair of one-run victories. In a 3-2 win in the opener, Higginbotham went 2-for-3, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit. In the second game, Higginbotham went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning.

In Minnesota's sweep of Michigan State on Sunday, she went 8-for-9 with a home run, two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI. In the 8-0 six-inning victory in the opener, Higginbotham went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Higginbotham led off the sixth with a double as Minnesota scored seven runs in the stanza. She finished the inning with an RBI double to give the Golden Gophers an 8-0 win. The two doubles tie the school record. In the nightcap, she went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a career-high four RBI. She had an RBI bunt single in the first inning and then capped her week off with a three-run home run in the seventh inning of the 9-2 win.

A first-team All-Mideast Region selection as a freshman, Higginbotham leads the Golden Gophers with a .370 batting average with four home runs and 20 RBI. A native of Tallahassee, Fla, she has started 98 straight games behind the plate for Minnesota.
