SOC: Minnesota Falls at Kansas 2-0

thoughtThe Golden Gopher soccer team was defeated by Kansas, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. The defending Big XII Champions scored two second half goals to claim the victory.

"I thought we made some improvements this weekend, although it didn't translate into a victory," head coach Mikki Denney Wright. "Molly (Schneider) was outstandng in net and kept us in the game. We were able to compete with one of the top teams in the nation and that's encouraging."

The two teamswent scoreless in the first half asKansas had severalscoring chancesturned asideby Minnesota goalkeeper Molly Schneider, who came up with several big saves in the first stanza.

The Jayhawks got on the board in the 63rd minute when junior forwardCaroline Smith deflected a pass sent into the box by freshman midfielderEmily Strinden. The deflection found freshman defenderAfton Sauer wide open on the far side of the goal where she was able to burythe ballinto the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Kansas upped its lead in the 84th minute when junior forwardKimberly Karfonta knocked in a loose ball in front of the net for the Jayhawks' final goal.

The Golden Gophers will continue their spring schedule in two weeks when they compete in their annual alumni game. The game on Saturday, April 16 will begin at 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
