MTR: Gopher Men Win 4x1,600m Relay at Drake Relays

pThe Minnesota men’s 4x1,600-meter relay won the event title at the Drake Relays on Friday, capturing the Golden Gophers’ seventh Drake Relays title in a relay event and the 44th title overall in the prestigious annual track and field classic. The foursome of Trent Riter, Ryan Malmin, Ben Hanson and Ryan Ford combined to run a time of 16 minutes, 42.46 seconds. This is also the first time the Gophers have won this particular event at the Drake Relays.

Two other Gopher relays took to the track on Friday. The 4x100-meter squad of Jason Erickson, Aaron Buzard, David Kelley and Andy Newman placed ninth in a time of 41.31 seconds. The 4x800-meter relay consisting of Mike VanBeusekom, Todd Johnson, Eddie Kibira and Tom Schmidt finished 13th in a time of 7:51.40.

Several other Gophers competed in individual events on Friday. Senior Josh Paulson cleared 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches to tie for fifth place in the high jump. Adam Schnaible placed 14th in the shot put with a throw of 53.1 1/2. Schnaible, a sophomore, fouled his first two attempts before landing a legal mark. Senior Joronne Williamson placed fourth in his preliminary heat of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.57. Kelley, who also ran on the Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay, finished 18th in the long jump with a leap of 22-11 3/4. Curt Schoenfelder placed 23rd in the discus with a throw of 154-6.

The Drake Relays conclude with a full day of events on Saturday.
