BB: Matt Loberg Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

Loberg moved his record to 4-2 with a win over No. 19 Michigan on Friday, Apr. 1. In that game, Loberg pitched eight shutout innings, gave up just four hits, two walks and struck out six batters. He outdueled Michigan’s Jim Brauer, who was Baseball America’s preseason candidate to be named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
With the eight shutout innings, Loberg has now pitched 16 consecutive scoreless innings going back to Mar. 25. He pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out a career-high nine batters in that inning.
Entering the week, Loberg leads Minnesota in wins (4), ERA (1.91), innings pitched (37.2) and is second in strikeouts at 24. His win total is tied for third in the Big Ten, while his ERA is fifth in the conference.
Minnesota will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 6 when it travels to Waterloo, Iowa to face Northern Iowa at 3 p.m. The Golden Gophers will play a four-game series against Indiana on Apr. 8-10 at Siebert Field. Friday’s game will be at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 9 at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m.
