WTF: 14 Gopher Athletes Set to Compete at Regionals

The top five finishers in each individual event qualify for the national meet. At-large selections, athletes who finish among the top-eight participants at Regionals and are ranked on the national performance list, will complete the national field. The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held on June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
Heading the list of women’s team qualifiers is Liz Podominick, the Big Ten Outdoor Freshman of the Year. Podominick’s mark of 174-11 is ranked third among discus throwers and her throw of 52-2 1/2 is listed as the fifth-best among the shot put competitors. Melissa Steele also has a fifth-place ranking among the 400-meter hurdlers after clocking a personal-best time of 57.67 seconds en route to her Big Ten title.
Action begins with the finals in the men’s discus and men’s high jump at noon on Friday. Preliminary rounds on the track start at 4 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay. The action resumes Saturday, starting with field event finals in the women’s discus and women’s high jump at noon. Running finals begin at 5 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay and continue through the final of the men’s 4x400-meter relay which is set for 8:15 p.m.
