BB: Minnesota Falls to Iowa 7-3 in Series Finale

Iowa got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. The Hawkeyes got a one-out single from Skyler Moss, and Nate Yoho delivered a two-run homer to give Iowa a 2-0 lead.
Minnesota scored a single run to cut the score to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. David Hrncirik (Madison, Wis.) led off with a single and stole second with nobody out. Kevin Carlson (Edina, Minn.) came up with a one-out RBI single to score Hrncirik to make the score 2-1.
The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andy Cox had a one-out single to get things started. Jason White delivered a two-out RBI triple to plate Cox to move the score to 3-1. Nathan Price followed with an RBI double to bring home White to make it 4-1. Price was thrown out when Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn.) took a relay throw from Tony Leseman (St. Paul, Minn.) and delivered it to Hrncirik who tagged out Price to end the inning.
Minnesota cut the lead to 4-2 with one run in top of the fifth inning. Fornasiere delivered a single to right field, and advanced to third when the rightfielder misplayed it. Luke MacLean (Bloomington, Minn.) delivered an RBI groundout to bring home Fornasieire to cut the score to 4-2.
Iowa got the run back in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-2. Kris Welker delivered an RBI double to give the Hawkeyes back a three-run lead.
The Golden Gophers cut the lead back to two runs with a single run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 5-3. With two outs, Taylor VanderAarde (Hastings, Minn.) was hit by a pitch, and moved up on a wild pitch. Carlson delivered a two-out RBI single to cut the lead back to 5-3.
Iowa pushed the lead up to 7-3 with two runs in the top of the seventh. Minnesota got the first two outs of the inning, but Andy Lytle delivered a two-out single. Yoho followed with a single to make it first and second. Welker followed with a two-run triple to give the Hawkeyes a 7-3 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning rain started falling, and the two teams sat through an hour and 15 minute rain delay.
Minnesota starter Dustin Brabender (Oregon, Wis.) suffered his first loss of the year to fall to 1-1, as he gave up eight hits and four runs in four innings. Sophomore Marcus McKenzie (Minnetonka, Minn.) gave up five hits and three runs in three innings of relief. Gary Perinar (Shorewood, Ill.) pitched one scoreless inning of relief for the Golden Gophers.
Iowa’s Austin Seward gave up just two earned runs in eight innings of relief, and struck out seven batters to pick up the win to move to 2- 1 on the season.
Fornasiere led the way for Minnesota reaching base four times, and going two-for-three with a run and two walks. Carlson was also two- for-four with a team-leading two RBI. Hrncirik finished the game two- for-four with one run and a stolen base.
The Hawkeyes were led by Welker who was two-for-four with three RBI, while Yoho was two-for-four with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Moss was also three-for-four with two runs in the game.
Minnesota will return home to Siebert Field where it will take on Big Ten conference leading Illinois in a four-game series on May 13-15. The first game will be on Friday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m.
