WBB: Former Golden Gopher Teammates Square-Off in WNBA

Janel McCarville, this year’s No. 1 pick overall by the Charlotte Sting, it was the inaugural game of hopefully a long and successful professional career. For Lindsay Whalen, who led her Connecticut Sun squad to the WNBA Finals as a rookie a year ago, it was the chance to play against a former teammate who together had helped Minnesota reach the Final Four in 2004.

Connecticut won the contest, 69-64, for the record. Both former Gophers started and contributed similar contributions to their respective teams. In many cases, the stats for Whalen and McCarville were eerily the same. They each scored six points on 2-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Both had three assists and played right around 20 minutes. McCarville did pull down four rebounds to one for Whalen, but in fairness to the Sun point guard, Whalen committed only one turnover to four for Shaq.

Though these Gophers in the WNBA will visit Minneapolis to play the Minnesota Lynx just once a piece, McCarville on June 4 and Whalen on July 17, they will face each other four times in the upcoming league’s regular season.
